I have got myself an optical/coax converter so I can play the TV through my DAC and main system.
I've just tried it on my ancient Technics portable CD player which has an optical output. It sounds really good.
Perhaps I will also try it on my old Aiwa CD player which resides in the caravan.
I was always under the impression that optical was inferior to coax as regards digital transmission, obviously that is erroneous thinking.
Optical connections.

I have never understood that, just what did you expect? reduced sound quality? Sounding like low bitrate mp3's? It is digital after all. Ok, maybe a bit more jitter, maybe pulse streaching due to cheap plastic fiber. But in terms of what fiber is used for everywhere else the data rate is very low.
And it has the advantage of galvanic isolation.
Especially with TV, hardly 192/24

Well, I suppose when one has never tried something personally, perceived wisdom (or lack of) rules ?
PS The Aiwa CDP sounds quite good as well.

Glass core are supposed to be 'better' than plastic core.
If you want to splash out, I have used glass core cables from Mark Grant which seem reasonably priced:
