This may be a bit out of date , but the best place I've found for O rings is polymax.co.uk.
BS379V75 is 279mm dia and 5.3mm cross section , they are £4.54 each, which means £14.18 a pair inc vat, postage and packing. They have a £10 minimum order, but it does not specify whether it is before or after vat etc. Delivery was 2 days.

I also put sound deadener to the underside of the platter.
I got a 10 inch x 16 inch sheet from a local car accessory shop that specialises in sound systems for a couple of pounds.
I cut a 210mm od, 96mm id ring a stuck it to the flat part of the platter.

I'm happy with the improvement, but I also gave the deck it's annual service, so which change was the major contributor, I don't know.

With Cinemags and 103s I've previously championed the use of the 37 Ohm taps.
But when I removed the body of the 103 the sound deteriorated.
I was trying the different taps with an Arkiv while setting up my Linn for (successful) sale. I found it sounded best on the 150 Ohm taps. Later I tried the 103 and liked what I heard, so 37 Ohms with body, 150 Ohms without, that makes no sense.

It seems to me that the sound of the Garrard with damped platter has similarities to a DD. Perhaps part of the DD sound is due to the platter being damped by the flux of the motor.

Regards Richard

No it isn't, and thanks! Easy to get it as well.

Okay that's for the Viton variety, the NBR one is only 64p!

Definitely earmarked

This might be a handy qty for sound deadening material. Without going mad. "Dynamat speaker mount kit"

I finally got my O ring cord

I cut 2 lengths 34" long and simply joined the ends together with super glue,
they fit really well,

first indications suggest there is some improvement in the sound, the platter certainly doesn't ring :D

Got mine today as well and made up two o rings with the same conclusion the platter doesn't ring but I will have to have more time to listen as the difference is not night and day but does seem better with a cleaner sound and clearer vocals in particular.

Greg I will try to send out enough to make two o rings tomorrow, when I can get a jiffy bag to put it in.

From what i head of richards deck, the damping rings make the most difference when the music gets complicated. With the damping rings things seem more in control, more individual. On simpler parts it makes less difference.

To my ears anyway.

I've added the diy o-rings to my 301 (non-strobe version).

Without it the sound seems slightly murky, rather like a slightly cloudy beer. Sounds with the o-rings are more distinct, less cluttered and more liable to "come from nowhere". There seems greater stability, the sort of thing you'd expect from a direct drive. These Garrard platters must ring, ring, ring.

I noticed a big improvement on Clapton Unplugged. My back-to-back test was done with the first track from Brothers in Arms.

I hope the o-rings don't become slack over time, I will need more metres if they do.

If they slack, could you not just cut a slither out and re-glue them?

Good point!

Also I'd add that the sound is tight & "in control".

Edit: I'm continuing my voyage of discovery......Brubeck / Blue Rondo - the plucked double bass is so clear and the timing has improved massively.

jclovesmusic is now selling platter mounting rings for garrards for £6 + £1 postage on ebay

i fitted his spindle thrust pad replacement yesterday with graeme. i think Will used the same one. none are listed today for garrards. there is one listed for rega/nad

i bought oil for the deck as well from the same ebay seller. it has made quite a big difference in all areas - i'm not sure how much is to do with the bearing and how much is to do with the oil. previously there was enough oil in the bearing to wet all the surfaces but not really any extra. we cleaned the spindle and bushes, etc with surgical spirit and on reassembly filled the bearing housing with oil. it felt smoother to turn.

the sound was more organic and less mechanical. we noticed more detail particularly in the bass. drums and cymbals sounded more like drums and cymbals, but the sound also seemed smoother. instrument tone was richer, we particularly enjoyed the guitars of led zepplin and black sabbath. clapton unplugged was bigger and more in the room, the speakers "disappearing" more. when the mix became more complex it remained easy to hear individual instruments and the little characterful flourishes of players who make them rather than just playing what would have been the standard form.

dull music is still dull, but interesting music is more interesting ! can't wait to try some choral stuff but had to go to work

Hi Richard,

Something to look out for. A while back, Darren experimented with this type of thrust pad. I think he used teflon for the disc. He found with the passage of a little time that the ball bearing sank into the teflon. It might be worth taking a measurement of the length of spindle exposed out of its bearing housing and periodically checking to see if you get any loss of exposed length (ahem, if you know what I mean!).

We also know that the standard Phosphor Bronze dome can flatten in time and you've replaced it with a ball so the contact area is very accute. It might be worth checking for wear on the ball or the base of the spindle periodically. It'll be a good opportunity to change your oil

Best wishes,

Greg
