It's going to be converted into an "audiophile" CD player.

I kid you not Paul.

There are instructions on the interweb on how to extract the SPDIF signal and how to easily add remote control.

I'll start a new thread soon. :)

OK I thought that or blue rays was the purpose.

are they cheap as chips these days?

Just shame I hardly have a single CD. I was one of those odd people who didn't buy into CDs in the 1980's when they came out. not because I was clever enough to realise they were not as perfect as the masses were informed. Just couldn't afford a cd spinner neither did I want to re-buy all my albums on the new format.

Some folk get very good results from what I've read.

I think the SCPH-1002 (UK model) is the one to go for, my one cost me £15.

The remote conversion uses a PS2 DVD remote control and receiver which cost me £5. I assume you need some sort of controller to make a CD play ?

The instructions on how to fit the receiver to the PS1 look quite simple.

Yes, AFAIK it only works with one particular model, the earliest one I think.

Interesting project Phil.

I tried it a few years ago but stopped short of using a remote control, and reboxing it..
They're quite easy to work on, as i remember.
Sadly i don't have any of the bits anymore, or i could have sent you some spares.
I couldn't see any improvement over my regular CD transport, but i only did half the mods.
Mine had a very pleasant and easy to listen presentation, but comparison showed a shortage of detail and dynamics. I'm useless at describing what i hear.
Hope you have more success..
:)
Much to learn there is.
