Well obviously I have returned safe and sound :D

Spent the weekend on this enormous campsite situated right under the Uffington white horse, four fields in all and there must've been a couple of hundred families (or maybe not quite that much) in the one I was on and it was still only half full.

What a pleasure it had been to see such a large number of well spoken and well behaved children of all ages ~ why do I even mention this, well perhaps because it makes a nice contrast to what I have on occasion have had to endure in the past at home :?:

No larking about or other "disturbances", just good old fashioned running around and games including kite flying, at one point a game of cricket broke out amongst a small group of 10 - 12 year olds, I haven't seen kids playing cricket since, well since I was a kid! Image

No audible bad language either, except one young lad exclaimng "bloody hell!" although to be fair he was at that precise moment hurtling down a 1 in 4 grassy slope on his bicycle with no chance whatsoever of being able to stop by the usual means until he was well on to the flat at the bottom.

And interesting names people seem to be giving heir kids these days, Antoine, Lucien, Joshua, Henry...

Oh yes a few dogs about as well, but again, you hardly heard a peep out of them.

Made me think it did, the future of the world will be safe with this lot. :D

No, Al that's not what I meant at all... fatuous remark.

From Mike's observation it sounded very civilised i.e. like a Quaker meeting.

I must be getting tired. It was at least 10 seconds until that clicked.
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

It was nothing like a quaker meeting! Just ordinary bods being ordinary.

I think the point I was trying to make was it's refreshing to be reminded occasionally that the kids you read about in the papers getting their third ASBO's or whatever are not representative of the species as a whole.

Or, p'raps I should stop reading our local rag

The press would have us believe that the end of the world is nigh. The youth clubs we run tell a different tale.
For every problem kid there's a good few decent ones.

Did sound like you were on a French campsite though.

well 50% of the children named had French names!

and oh dear, pontificate, 'having worked with children all my life ... I still think there are a few bad'uns and most who are fine, funny and okay and a few more who are exemplary.' Children may not be like us, sound like us at times but they are really! I'm still happily rubbing shoulders with tiny ones through to hulking adolescents and I feel really good about being able to do so.

Quakers are if anything, polite, quiet and cheerful; delightfully normal!

Yep, people are people too :-)

I think reporting the news ceased to be the reason for much of what is written in newspapers some time ago, there is normally at least one extra agenda.

I'd say ~1920, give or take.

I'm not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but if ever I did embrace the faith it would probably be as a Quaker.
