2) To try and reduce artery "furring up", and in turn reduce blood pressure.
Are you still not taking Satins?
Yes, I don't take Statins, and even if my Doctor told me they might help I'm not sure that I would take them.

Last time I had a health review my cholesterol level was not an issue.

There was an interesting piece about Statins on the BBC health page yesterday.

How can one tell ?

My cholesterol levels may well have been greater in the past.

I think I was referring to your second objective.

Calcium is one of the main factors in clogging up arteries. Not going where it should be ( bones/teeth ) but being in artery walls. There is a type of scan that can be done, that shows up calcium in the heart and surrounding area. It is being touted as the best test for assessing heart disease risk. I can't remember the acronym, but there are plenty of cardiologists showing videos of this subject on Youtube.

Cholesterol furs arteries. This us a serious issue the older one gets. Some people do not get cholesterol issues

Statins de-fur and keep arteries unclogged with cholesterol.

If you need them, take them. The balance is hugely hugely in favour of taking statins; get the right one and it works, no side effects.

YouTube is full of truth and full of bollocks I'd have to look up or indeed ask a Doctor or two ( of medicine) about what Mark suggests.

It seems Statins can increase blood sugar level, and as I'm pre diabetic I'm trying to reduce mine.

I've taken low dosage (10mg) statins for many years (high LDL - genetic, not dietary). For me, they work really well.

From what I've read & been told by my GP and other medical professionals, statins can lead to SLIGHTLY elevated FASTING blood glucose levels in those ALREADY WITH DIABETES and then only at HIGH DOSAGES. (my caps!).

Notice the qualifications - they're important. Statins do so much good in preventing coronary issues, it's insane not to take them if needed - for the vast majority there are no side effects, only huge benefits. Note that some statins work better than others for a given individual...

Phil, one of the key things to know is the breakdown of you cholesterol - total, HDL and LDL.
You can run a fairly high total cholesterol if your HDL is a good fraction of it ( eg. maybe 30% + ) .
There should be tables out there ( there used to be ) that show your risk level for various combinations.

Cutting down on a lot of carbs (they turn to sugar), avoid added sugar and any foods with more than 5% sugar content, and eating sensible amounts of good fats (extra virgin olive oil and butter) as they fill you up longer than carbs worked wonders for me. Cut my blood sugar from the verge of full diabetes to low in 6 months, and reduced my cholesterol and blood pressure. NHS nutrition guidance.
