But you still have the problem of generating the H2 (in a carbon neutral way) in the first place to solve.
I agree, but ways will be found.
Not likely at this point in time
Not today, not tomorrow or next week, but ---------------------

".....but soon. and for the rest of your life.
I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of low-carbon energy don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."

...oooh, hang on, yes they do . D'Oh !

But that’s only the case if the other solutions don't also advance at the same time. Unless you use fuel cells then H2 has some of the same emission problems as petrol for use in city's. Synthetic fuel solves all the same problems as H2 but is much simpler to use store and transport.

Sorry, I was not considering the use of H2 in IC engines, though one Japanese manufacturer (I forget which one) is developing such a thing.

H2 and fuel cells is my prediction.

A bit like the VHS / Betamax battle ?

A bit like the VHS / Betamax battle
I would have thought a closer analogy (as that was after all just a format battle, there were few other differences) would be gas light versus electric light for home lighting. But time will tell.

In a way I think HGV (at least in Europe would be simple to go battery, just swap the tractor unit while its recharging if the enforced regular stop is not enough time. The bigger problem is the USA with two drivers in a cab driving 24 hours (freedom).

Or have two trailers, a small one for the load and a big one for the batteries.

Personally I don't agree, the number and location of spare ready charged tractor units would be a prohibitive cost. And what about non articulated HGVs and long distance coaches ?

Only time (and technological progress) will tell.

The Tractor in effect becomes a electric motor, and a battery pack with a cab on the top. I suspect not more than twice the cost of just the batteries if that.
And what about non articulated HGVs
Other than for around cities (where a battery would be fine), what advantage do they have over articulated units? I think its the same old thing (the only reason you buy a 10mm drill is you want a 10mm hole, no one wants the drill), no one really cares how the transport problem is solved, its just transporting the stuff that’s what needed, so it not a case that every one of the current solutions needs to be converted, it may end up with entirely different solutions to the same or different problems.

It's Toyota.

I can’t think of a more ludicrous idea than the above, lower the cost by…..oh, let’s build more nuclear reactors! Hmmm wonder who is pushing the idea.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... renewables

Look just how green Hinckley Point C is, and the Gov is paying over the odds (almost double) at a fixed upfront price for the power so the French and Chinese can recoup their costs….genius.

Ah there is is £92.50 / MWh guaranteed to EDF even if the market rate drops below that, the ‘top up’ to be paid by the consumer…as I said genius.

I'm not really "up" on electric motor technology, but this short video from Mahle seemed interesting.

"The rapid growth of renewable energy and electric vehicles means the demand for the minerals they rely on is set to soar. By 2030, the world could need half as much tin again, and for lithium the increase is a massive 500% by 2050 according to the World Bank. With battery production set to start in the UK, could the answer to their supply lie in the rocks of Cornwall?"

It seems, from reading test reports, that many of the new EVs here, or coming soon, do not have the super quick 0-60 times as in the Tesla model 3.

A question to Greg (or any other Tesla 3 owners), how often do you actually use the full 0-60 performance, and would a car with a slower performance to 60mph (say 6-8 seconds) really matter in everyday usage ?

I guess you could answer your own question. How often do you think your car needs to accelerate faster?
