#1 Fostex 126s

Post by andrew Ivimey »

I've just fitted some 126s in the attached (Fostex designed) cabinets.

They sound awful!

Maybe they would sound better with the sides on.
Much to learn there is.

Now you would think a man with Andrews experience might have noticed that.

Are they new drivers Andrew ?

Run 'em in for at least 24 hours like this mr I.

Image

Little amp, wire them up in anitphase + dub CD on 'repeat'. Leave them on for as long as possible.

Bring them indoors, wind them up and crack open a bottle of Blue Nun.

Job done! They REALLY do need running in, I didn't believe it until I heard it for meself.

As the Monkees almost sang "...then I heard that bass...now I'm a believer". or summat.

Blue Nun, ooooh....no doubt about it, you got quality tastes there, Dave.

Yes, they need to run in, mine 167's are still improving, especially in the bass, sounded like a 70's/80's tranny radio at first.

If you really want to know what the 126 can do though, you'll need to get them into a better cabinet. In sheer performance terms, it's a remarkable little unit, which can be, and is, used in some hellish expensive systems, like the ones attached, with nobody batting an eyelid WRT its performance.
Scott, as you know I'm playing with ( your old!) 126's over Christmas. In your opinion is the Saburo cab still a good way to go WRT getting the best out of a 126?

Cheers,

This Fostex cabinet -- to be kind -- is not very good. A small BR would probably give more & better bass...

We were going to burn ours (but held off because it is a shame to burn BB) and luckily found that the holey basket 16 ohm Coral 103A works much better in them.

Unfortunately, built from particle board/MDF, yours probably would burn nicely.
