#1 ad blockers

Post by ed »

Has anybody else noticed the number of sites that now present blank pages if you run an adblocker?

I run ghostery on the windows machine and lots of sites will show their home pages as normal and then if you want to dig deeper the function buttons just don't work.

I feel a bit sad that the world is no longer open, the dream seems to have been overrun by forced advertising.....I can understand the corporate need for revenue, but things like gumtree.....I suppose it needs financing

I can't help thinking about the similarity between web presence and the trick the TV companies pull by putting series one of a program on free to view and then giving subsequent series to the paid channels. Some web presence was ad free in the beginning and now isn't....

The one thing that spoils my enjoyment of YouTube videos (on my new smart TV) is the adverts. Some of the longer ads can be switched off after a few seconds (if required) but the only way out is to pay for Google plus. :( :(

I did start to get ads on my laptop when on YouTube but that has now stopped.

Using Adblock + I do get web sites that wont work, but it's easy to disable for each site if necessary.

Like several others here, I run Pi-hole.

I've not yet found a site that doesn't work with it. Can you give me an example of one that doesn't work for you that I can try?

This looks promising for smart tv. Will try it later today.

here's one:

https://composite-rc-gliders.com/en

when I go to the site with firefox I'm presented with a blank white page. When I pause ghostery and refresh, the page magically appears.

Works fine with Pi-hole. Have you tried other browsers? I'm using Chrome on Android for the screenshot below.

One thing to note. There don't seem to be any third party ads on the page and it doesn't seem that Pi-hole has changed it (temporarily disabling Pi-hole and reloading the page looks the same), so this looks like a pure Ghostery issue

I've installed this app on my Sony Bravia smart TV. So far so good - no ads on Youtube. :D

It's really annoying to just want to listen to music to relax and immediately the ads break that space.

I tried Brave and it's pretty good :D
