I've been there; govt ecc81 for £6 - Mullards by another name- cv etc - all gone now.

It's the sort of shop where 19 set tx/rx s were 49 shillings and 11 pee when I couldn't afford that. Oxford had a bigger version of that shop....

That'd be J. Birkett - extremely famous old shop in the same vein as Proops and other war surplus suppliers.

Yep... there was also 'the shop on the bridge' in Reading. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be ...

I've looked in the window of that shop in Lincoln a number of times, but it's never been open. Probably a good thing.

I had my 2nd coach trip this month, today. To Broadway in the Cotswolds, and a steam hauled round trip on the GWR (Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway).

From tomorrow onwards steam is banned on that line (and many others) because of the danger of lineside fires.

And, SOB SOB, my big charter train trip on 20th August, from Ely to Kingswear has been cancelled.

May be due to impending railway workers strike action on that day ? Whatever, I've been looking forward to that since we booked tickets in February. :(

I stripped down one of my bikes yesterday and replaced the bottom bracket and crankset. Today I will service the wheel bearings, fit new tyres and give the rest of the bike a deep clean.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Just finished watching a 2013 Sky Arts documentary I taped last night about the resurgence of analogue modular synthesizers, their pioneers and the current younger builders, users and musicians. ‘I Dream of Wires.’ About three quarters of the way through the programme, who should turn up but Eric Barbour of VTV and Svetlana fame, talking about his tube modules that fit into Euroracks. His firm Metasonix has been going since he found himself ‘unemployed’ in the early 2000s. The man is crazy; a cross between Richard Dunn and Dr Gizmo. His marketing methods are…er…..interesting.

An interview from years ago:

Metasonix T1 synthsizer:

Thought it might be interesting.

Just finished changing the glass in the garden room bay windows, 14 hours yesterday and 5 this morning, 24 double glazed units removed and replaced with more efficient units with reflective coatings and krypton gas fill. Hopefully with 14 m2 of glass in that room, the more efficient units will pay for themselves. (Calcs would suggest almost a kw less loss)

The hot weather was an aid, as it made removing the old butyl glazing tape really easy, it almost fell off. The rebates of the utile timber frames were as good as the day we put them in 24 years ago. So should last a long time still.

Now got to wait for it to cool down before I can give them a coat of paint. I have noticed the coating, which looks slightly mirrored from the outside is cutting down the solar gain too.

Just fitted a new mixer tap to the kitchen sink.

The old tap was getting harder to operate with arthritic fingers, so now we have one with levers that are light as a feather. :)

What are you doing ?

I'm trying to work out what size me balls are (shurrup already DTB).

Image

Above is what I'm measuring, as you can see, on the metric scale I can measure to 0.05mm, so I'm seeing 5.55mm.

On the Imperial scale, I'm a bit stuck. I can read/see the imperial increments in 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 and 1/2" but the smaller scale marked 1/128th... I don't know how to read it. I can see the number '4' on the lines up on the top scale but I don't know what that means or how to read that division.

FWIW, I think its something to do with 1/32 of an inch because 5.56mm = 7/32" which I believe is the size of this ball bearing.

Here's some close ups of the scales....

Can anyone here explain what I'm seeing but not really understanding?

It's a vernier, innit.
Looks like you've got 3/16 plus 4 x 1/128 there.
That ties up , it's the same as 5.55mm.

According to my drill size chart,

7/32 inches = 0.2187 inches or 5.5550 mm

Plenty of that size balls for sale on Ebay.
