Why not? It's fun!andrew Ivimey wrote:Yes all right Ali, don't rub it in!
Its the 'Quasars' that I hang onto about quality infbafspeaks ...
But I have started sperryments with a box and an eight inch speaker (intending to buid to full glory of som esort later)
It is interesting to begin at the beginning, so to speak.

I think I've got so used to hearing a box rattling about that I actually miss that resonance (or whatever its called) when I hear OB's at Fest's. I've never heard/lived with an OB in a home environment.
Did it take time to adjust after living with boxes so long?

did for me dave.. took quite a while
its going back.. that you then seem to know what sounds right
I think we all judge other systems by what we are used to hearing...

you could try using "the edge" program to model your OB shape (the OB proper part rather than the U baffle part)
it's a tiny program and very simple to use
see if you can hear the difference with a shape that it predicts will give you a flatter frequency response
remember you are only interested in the frequencies produced by the driver in the baffle you are modelling (don't know what your crossover frequency is)
remember to take into account what the baffle is sitting on as part of the baffle( in other words the top of the U baffle)
you can also see what it predicts for the shape you have now - it might be good as it is
but the program doesn't take all factors into account so only gives you an indication rather than the whole picture

Hi Richard.
I'm looking at the edge, are there any instructions as to how to work it ?
Is "baffle designer" the place to start ?
I feel over the edge already.
EDIT
I have got to playing with baffle sizes, and moving the speaker around within the baffle to see how it affects the waveform.
How do you know what to set "edge sources" and "speaker source density" at ? And where to position the mike in the picture ?
I have set the mike distance at 3M (listening position ?)
Easy he says !

Enough of this !
I'm trying to be clever using an "easy to use" program to get the baffle size on my 126 right, so making it even better !
The one thing I do notice using the 126 on an open baffle is "the no box sound".
Now perhaps that may seem obvious, but I immediately recognised that sound when I heard Richards efforts at Eggborough.

I think it's good your recognising sounds. Maybe you're listening more intently and remembering sounds better, thats good.
Keep up the good work.

Listening in a tent ?
Today I am mainly experimenting with round baffles.
I knew the MDF from those Fane sub boxes would come in useful, I just knew,

A propos of nothing, it never occurred to me before what a beautiful object a double bass is.Dave the bass wrote:

The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Yeah, gorgeous arn't they. I tried one once, I was hopeless! No frets!
JTS reckons I need to buy a good one when I retire and learn to play it properly.
I agree with JTS.
