#1 SOURCE FOR HT PLUGS & SOCKETS TO LINK PSU AND PRE BOXES

Post by Paul Bannister »

Help required please:

I'm trying to find a plug and panel socket which will carry 325v.dc HT between a PSU chassis and a pre chassis.

I've been scouring the RS and Rapid web sites but can't find anything yet. Has anyone been there already - know the part numbers?

Regards,
Paul

Hi-the Cliff connectors as WAD used are suitable for 250V AC so may be ok for your DC voltage and are a lot easier to use than the ones WD now use on the 3 series pre/phonos.

I use them on my ECL82 but the HT is not as high as yours.

Paul,

from the RAPID catalogue try:
Bulgin 900 series rated 32A 600V AC / DC
23-2425 (2 pole male)
23-2426 (2 pole female)
23-2427 (3 pole male)
23-2428 (3 pole female)

panel mount connectors for above

23-2443 through to 23-2446

Also try:

Switchcraft IP68 - rated 7.5A 600V rms
23-2210 (2212) there is a whole series these 2-pin throu 18-pin, free plugs /sockets and panel plugs/sockets.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for both your inputs.

Philip,
I also was concerned about the Cliff ratings being high enough - I had some left from an earlier project.

Colin,
Looking at both Buccaneer and Switchcraft items you identified. I thought the Switchcraft looked better, but couldn't quite make sense of how many bits I needed to make up a plug. Meanwhile, I found some tasty Fischer plugs and sockets on Farnell.

Thanks for spurring me on to wade through the web catalogues. Finding the 'right' search word can sometimes be less than obvious.

I see the Speakon's are rated at 250v 30A. - I'm never sure how much tolerance there is in raising the voltage - with such a high amps rating can one 'off-set' this? Can you simply use V=W/A? - for example 500v at 15A. I guess it also depends on the insulation rating of the plug/socket body.

The Fischer 102/103 series plugs and sockets I went for are rated at 800vac to 1300vac., 5 to 8 amps depending on number of ways - seemed like a safe bet.

The SpeakOn series is rated at 250V AC which is 350V peak so I believe good enough for 350V DC.

Word of caution, just got home to a parcel from Rapid, the 900 series 5 pin plug and socket are positively heroic in size and wouldn't look out of place on an 833 or GM70 amp - not for a phono stage.

My fault I should have paid more attention to the datasheet ho hum....

I will try returns and see how I get on.

If you try the SpeakOn, also look at the size esp the 8 way. They aren't small either.

Thanks Stephen.

Rapid have issued me a returns number and will credit me the items, very nice of them, so I only loose the cost of postage.

100 lines - I must pay more chuffin attention...
