Well, just possibly the reason for the lack of convincing explanation is that they don't work.There are loads of these things around, and I've yet to find a convincing explanation of how they work. Google "overunity" or "zero point energy".
Not sure where zero point enery comes into it, thats no different to Hawking's tiny black holes emmiting energy from virtual pairs. I am not a physist, but I would put my money on the first law of thermodynamics.
