Saw this on DIY Audio and thought of Ant!

Available as a part-kit on ebay and not as expensive as I thought it would be, though certainly not cheap! He also sells the bearing without the platter.

Partnered with a nice linear-tracking arm, it's almost tempting to get back into vinyl with something that looks that beautiful.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I’ve had an idea like that running around in the back of my head for a while, but I saw this recently which was intriguing:

The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

The current state of the direct drive turntable I have been working on for the last 10 or so years uses magnets to reduce the load on the bearings.
